On 30 October, the Prime Minister held a press conference with the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, announcing that the Government will introduce legislation to amend the Migration Act to prevent irregular maritime arrivals taken to a regional processing country since July 2013 from making a valid application for an Australian visa. This is the latest in the trend of regressive policies. The Catholic Bishops said in their 2015 Social Justice Statement: 'Australia should be showing leadership in the region, not just in combating people smuggling but in increasing the capacity for protection and resettlement places in South-East Asia.' ... read more From the Secretariat

Catholic Religious Australia says it supports those welfare groups that have called for an increase in Newstart allowance rather than imposing stricter obligations. In a statement. CRA said it "sympathises with Human Resources Minister Alan Tudge’s frustration that many young people are caught, as he says in 'welfare dependency', and that Centrelink might accept ‘reasonable excuses’ for job seekers not presenting themselves for interview". ... see more News items

Indonesian authorities killed more than 271 people in Timor-Leste on this day in 1991. They described the incident as a spontaneous reaction to violence from protesters, or a 'misunderstanding'.
