1706f3 June - 25th anniversary of the High Court's Mabo Case decision (1992)

This year marks 25 years since the High Court of Australia’s judgement in 1992 in the Mabo case. The judgments of the High Court inserted the legal doctrine of native title into Australian law. In recognising the traditional rights of the Meriam people to their islands in the eastern Torres Strait, the Court also held that native title existed for all Indigenous peoples in Australia who held rights in their lands under their own laws and customs prior to the assertion of British sovereignty and establishment Colonies across the continent from 1788.
