Anti-Poverty week will run from 15 to 21 October, coinciding with the United Nations International Day to End Poverty on 17 October. 1709f28 September 1872 - Birth of Aboriginal activist David Unaipon

A well-known Ngarrindjeri man, he was a preacher, inventor and writer. Unaipon's contribution to Australian society helped to break many Indigenous Australian stereotypes. He is featured on the $50 note. By the 1920s he was the best-known Aboriginal person in Australia and accepted as a spokesperson for his people. His skill in manipulating members of the press - who invariably described him as a full-blood Aborigine - lent authenticity to his statements at a time when governments were concerned with the so-called 'half-caste problem'. ... see more Diary items
