1711aPope Francis' message as we approach Advent and Christmas

The intrusive advertising, the conspicuous affluence and consumerist binge at this time of year can so easily obscure the Season of Advent and reduce the true meaning of Christmas. In the process, the poor and marginalised members of our society are so easily forgotten. Pope Francis has instituted a new World day of the Poor which, this year, will be celebrated on Sunday 19 November. In his message for the day, he says he wants the annual event to be a 'powerful appeal to our consciences as believers, allowing us to grow in the conviction that sharing with the poor enables us to understand the deepest truth of the Gospel.'  ... read more From the Secretariat

1711bRefugee Council says Australia must guarantee peace on Manus

As Australia's self-imposed deadline for the closure of the Manus Island detention centre approached, the Refugee Council of Australia called for Government assurance of peace for detainees. Phil Glendenning, President of the Council said, 'The Australian Government has had five years to develop a sustainable resolution to a problem of its own making. Manus is a powder keg today and we are calling on Acting Prime Minister Bishop to guarantee peace for the detainees - the majority of whom are recognised as refugees.' ... see more Current Issues/Resources

This is clearly the most important international instrument regarding religious rights and prohibition of intolerance or discrimination based on religion or belief.
