National Sorry Day

26 May 2020 All day

On 26 May 1997, the Bringing Them Home Report was tabled in the Federal Parliament. It was the final report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families that was conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (which is now called the Australian Human Rights Commission) between 1995 and 1997. The following year, in 1998, this day was marked as National Sorry Day for the first time.

National Sorry Day is a time to remember the grief, suffering and injustice experienced by the stolen generations. The impacts of these removals under various Government policies, which formally ended in 1970, are still felt today.
