World Day of the Poor

Recurring event see all

15 November 2020 All day

‘Stretch forth your hand to the poor’ (Sir 7:32). Age-old wisdom has proposed these words as a sacred rule to be followed in life. Today these words remain as timely as ever. They help us fix our gaze on what is essential and overcome the barriers of indifference. Poverty always appears in a variety of guises, and calls for attention to each particular situation. In all of these, we have an opportunity to encounter the Lord Jesus, who has revealed himself as present in the least of his brothers and sisters (cf. Mt 25:40).

Pope Francis, World Day of the Poor Message 2020

For reflection

In his Message Pope Francis says that “prayer to God and solidarity with the poor and suffering are inseparable” (n 2). How are prayer and solidarity with the poor and suffering connected in your life? How are they connected in the life of your parish or school community, or that of a Catholic organisation or movement in which you are involved?

Who is being ‘left behind’ in our national community’s response to COVID-19? What can you /we do about it?

Has the pandemic helped you to rediscover “the importance of simplicity” or keep your “eyes fixed on the essentials” (n 6)?
