SUMMARY:1838: Myall Creek Massacre\, NSW
DESCRIPTION:Myall Creek Massacre (2003) by Vincent Serico (1949 – 2008)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Myall Creek Massacre was just one example of the widespread culture of frontier violence against Aboriginal people in New South Wales in the 1830’s. Despite there being strong laws against this violence\, the murder of Aboriginal people was generally accepted as part of the expansion of territory by settlers. Muswellbrook police magistrate Edward Denny Day described this ongoing conflict as ‘a war of extermination’ by some stockmen\, settlers\, and convicts.  \n\n\n\nWhen Aboriginal people killed stockmen near Myall Creek as part of this frontier conflict\, an expedition from Sydney led by Major James Nunn\, the Commandant of the New South Wales Mounted Police\, massacred up to 50 Wirrayaraay people who were camped at Waterloo Creek. Their bodies were then burned. Nearby stockmen and settlers were also encouraged by the expedition to kill any Aboriginal people they encountered.  \n\n\n\nBreaking the conspiracy of silence around the murder of this group of Aboriginal people were a station manager named William Hobbs\, local police superintendent Thomas Foster\, and settler Frederick Foot. Eight men were tried and found guilty of murder in the Australian Supreme Court. They were hanged on December 18\, 1838. For many in the colonial community of New South Wales there was more outrage around the execution of British citizens than the massacre of the Wirrayaraay people. Future perpetrators of violence against Aboriginal people took steps to cover their tracks and avoid prosecution.   \n\n\n\nThe process of radical truth telling continues today in the quest for true reconciliation\, justice and peace for all Australians.   \n\n\n\nGoing Deeper: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.nma.gov.au/defining-moments/resources/myall-creek-massacre   \n\n\n\nPrayer:\n\n\n\nPrayer for Aboriginal Ancestors  \n\n\n\nAlmighty God\, ever-loving Father\, by becoming human your Son has united himself  with people of every race\, language\, and way of life\, and through his death on the cross\, mingled his blood with the blood of all Koorie people  who have died unjustly throughout our history.  \n\n\n\nHear our prayer as we remember those who died  in defence of their land and traditions. Grant peace for them and all who now live in this land.  May the walls which prejudice raises between us crumble beneath the shadow of the outstretched arms  of him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.  \n\n\n\nAmen.  \n\n\n\nAboriginal Catholic Ministry\, Victoria.  \n\n\n\nArtwork: \n\n\n\nMyall Creek Massacre (2003) by Vincent Serico (1949 – 2008)  Music: \n\n\n\nWe Sing by Kutcha Edwards  \n\n\n\n\n\nWe Sing – Kutcha Edwards

SUMMARY:2004: Queensland Bishops issue 'Let the Many Coastlands be glad!' Pastoral Letter on the Great Barrier Reef
DESCRIPTION:“The Holy Spirit is clearly guiding us into a deeper sense ofcompanionship and care in regard to all the varied forms of life onplanet Earth. Not only is the Reef a precious ecosystem in itself\, but alsoan integral part of the one web of planetary life that connects us all –the human species and all species of the land and sea\, rainforest andreef\, mountains\, plains and inland desert.” Catholic Bishops of Queensland\, Let the Many Coastlands be Glad!\, 2004\n\n\n\nToday is a great day to read Let the Many Coastlands Be Glad! again. \n\n\n\nFor Reflection\n\n\n\nImagine you were helping the Queensland Bishops to draft a pastoral letter on the Great Barrier Reef today. What has changed for the Great Barrier Reef since Let the Many Coastlands Be Glad! was published? Are there new issues to address? How might you take the teaching of Pope Francis into account in updating the Queensland Bishops’ teaching?

SUMMARY:1992: High Court Decision in the Mabo Case
DESCRIPTION:Eddie Mabo – Marc Nemorin\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year marks the 29th anniversary of the Mabo Decision where six out of seven High Court judges agreed that the Meriam people held traditional ownership of the lands of Mer in the Torres Strait. Eddie Koiki Mabo successfully argued that his family’s ancestral land was not owned by the Crown. This landmark decision in the High Court of Australia overturned ‘terra nullius’\, an understanding that Australia was empty land belonging to no one before British occupation. The decision paved the way for native title in the Native Title Act of 1993. Eddie died before the decision was handed down in 1992 but his life leaves a powerful legacy: the traditional connection and occupation of land by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is now recognised in law across Australia.  \n\n\n\nGoing Deeper: \n\n\n\nhttps://digital-classroom.nma.gov.au/defining-moments/mabo-decision  \n\n\n\nPrayer:\n\n\n\nPrayer for Unity  \n\n\n\nCreator God\,  may the power of Your grace transform us.  \n\n\n\nChrist\, give us courage and hope to manifest the unity we have in you\, and to share our life with each other and the world.  \n\n\n\nHoly Spirit\,  empower us to work for justice for the people of the earth.  \n\n\n\nGod\, in your grace\, transform the world.  \n\n\n\nAmen.  \n\n\n\nThe National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ecumenical Commission (NATSIEC)  of the National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA)\, 2007.  \n\n\n\nArtwork:\n\n\n\nEddie Mabo by Marc Nemorin  \n\n\n\nMusic:\n\n\n\nKoiki by Mau Power\, featuring Radical Son  \n\n\n\n\n\nKoiki by Mau Power\, featuring Radical Son

It directly took up the issue of the dignity and rights of workers in a rapidly changing world where industrialisation had created an ever widening gap between the materially rich and the working poor. Rerum Novarum offered a just way forward for employers and workers\, naming human rights in every workplace as foundational for a just society. The encyclical emphatically stated that moral virtue was central to authentic Christian life. This includes just work policies and practices:  \n\n\n\n“…..it is more easy to understand that the true worth and nobility of man lie in his moral qualities\, that is\, in virtue; that virtue is\, moreover\, the common inheritance of men\, equally within the reach of high and low\, rich and poor; and that virtue\, and virtue alone\, wherever found\, will be followed by the rewards of everlasting happiness.”  Rerum Novarum #24\n\n\n\nTo view the Encyclical: \n\n\n\nhttp://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiii/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_l-xiii_enc_15051891_rerum-novarum.html   \n\n\n\nTo find out more about Catholic Social Teaching: \n\n\n\n\nCatholic Social Teaching an Introduction\n\n\n\n\nPrayer for Workers: \n\n\n\nDignity of Work and the Rights of Workers \n\n\n\nLord God\, Master of the Vineyard\,How wonderful that you have invited uswho labor by the sweat of our browto be workers in the vineyardand assist your workto shape the world around us. \n\n\n\nAs we seek to respond to this call\,make us attentive to those who seek workbut cannot find it. \n\n\n\nHelp us listen to the struggles of thosewho work hard to provide for their familiesbut still have trouble making ends meet. \n\n\n\nOpen our eyes to the struggles of those exploitedand help us speak for just wages and safe conditions\,the freedom to organize\, and time for renewal. For work was made for humankindand not humankind for work.Let it not be a vehicle for exploitationbut a radiant expression of our human dignity. \n\n\n\nGive all who labor listening heartsthat we may pause from our workto receive your gift of rest. \n\n\n\nFill us with your Holy Spiritthat you might work through us to let your justice reign. \n\n\n\nAmen. \n\n\n\nCopyright © 2019\, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
