SUMMARY:Saint Alberto Hurtado SJ
DESCRIPTION:“Christ roams through our streets in the person of so many suffering poor\, sick\, dispossessed and people thrown out of their miserable slums: Christ huddled under bridges\, in the person of so many children who lack someone to call father\, who have been deprived for many years from a mother’s kiss upon their foreheads…Christ is without a home!” St Alberto Hurtado SJ\n\n\n\nAlberto Hurtado SJ (1901-1952) served the poor in Chile and founded the Hogar de Cristo or “Home of Christ” for the poor and abandoned young people. He was a staunch advocate of workers rights. Find out more about his life here. \n\n\n\nAs the Hurtado Jesuit Centre in the UK explain: \n\n\n\n“Alberto Hurtado realised the great dangers of his time. In opposition to exploitative capitalism and communist revolution under way in various countries of the world\, he\, inspired by the social teaching of the Church\, promoted a different path: a Christian Social Order\, based on the two great virtues of love and justice. But he did not want charity without justice. He said: ‘Many works of charity can bear our society\, but all this immense effort of generosity\, much to praise\, fails to repair the ravages of injustice. Injustice causes far more evils than can be repaired by charity. ‘ ‘We must be righteous before we are generous.'” Hurtado Jesuit Centre

SUMMARY:Saint Lawrence
DESCRIPTION:What do you think are the real treasures of the Church? \n\n\n\nLittle is actually known about St Lawrence\, but the following legend\, recounted by Franciscan Media\, persists: \n\n\n\nAs deacon in Rome\, Lawrence was charged with the responsibility for the material goods of the Church\, and the distribution of alms to the poor. When Lawrence knew he would be arrested like the pope\, he sought out the poor\, widows\, and orphans of Rome and gave them all the money he had on hand\, selling even the sacred vessels of the altar to increase the sum. When the prefect of Rome heard of this\, he imagined that the Christians must have considerable treasure. He sent for Lawrence and said\, “You Christians say we are cruel to you\, but that is not what I have in mind. I am told that your priests offer in gold\, that the sacred blood is received in silver cups\, that you have golden candlesticks at your evening services. Now\, your doctrine says you must render to Caesar what is his. Bring these treasures—the emperor needs them to maintain his forces. God does not cause money to be counted: He brought none of it into the world with him—only words. Give me the money\, therefore\, and be rich in words.” Lawrence replied that the Church was indeed rich. “I will show you a valuable part. But give me time to set everything in order and make an inventory.” After three days he gathered a great number of blind\, lame\, maimed\, leprous\, orphaned\, and widowed persons and put them in rows. When the prefect arrived\, Lawrence simply said\, “These are the treasure of the Church.” The prefect was so angry he told Lawrence that he would indeed have his wish to die—but it would be by inches. He had a great gridiron prepared with coals beneath it\, and had Lawrence’s body placed on it. After the martyr had suffered the pain for a long time\, the legend concludes\, he made his famous cheerful remark\, “It is well done. Turn me over!” Franciscan Media

SUMMARY:1945: Destruction of Hiroshima by atomic bomb
DESCRIPTION:“With deep conviction I wish once more to declare that the use of atomic energy for purposes of war is today\, more than ever\, a crime not only against the dignity of human beings but against any possible future for our common home.  The use of atomic energy for purposes of war is immoral\, just as the possessing of nuclear weapons is immoral\, as I already said two years ago.  We will be judged on this. Future generations will rise to condemn our failure if we spoke of peace but did not act to bring it about among the peoples of the earth.  How can we speak of peace even as we build terrifying new weapons of war?  How can we speak about peace even as we justify illegitimate actions by speeches filled with discrimination and hate?” Pope Francis\, Address at the Peace Memorial\, Hiroshima\, 24 November 2019.\n\n\n\nThe hibakusha\, as the survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are known\, are becoming fewer. You can read the story of Junko\, who now lives in Sydney\, here. \n\n\n\nPope John Paul II was the first Pope to visit Hiroshima. You can read his address from 1981 here. It was in response to this address that the Catholic Bishops of Japan established the 10 Days for Peace which run from 6 to 15 August. This is a good time to pray for peace and nuclear disarmament. \n\n\n\nYou can find more information about the atomic bombs here.

SUMMARY:2010: Entry into force of UN Convention on Cluster Munitions
DESCRIPTION:The Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) prohibits all use\, stockpiling\, production and transfer of Cluster Munitions. The CCM was adopted in Dublin on 30 May 2008. It has 108 signatories. The Convention became binding international law when it entered into force on 1 August 2010 after 30 States – including the Vatican City State – had ratified it. As of September 2011\, 60 States have ratified the CCM and future States Parties will accede to the Convention by submitting their ratifications to the United Nations. \n\n\n\nWhy does the Church Opposes Cluster Munitions?\n\n\n\nThe use of force must be a last resort\, and it can only be considered for the defense of innocent lives.  Even if these conditions are met\, the use of force must discriminate or distinguish between combatants and civilians\, and the suffering caused must not be greater than the good to be achieved.  Cluster munitions are not able to meet these tests. SUMMARY:Saint Ignatius of Loyola
DESCRIPTION:One of the many gifts of St Ignatius to the Church is his understanding of the process of discernment. Discernment is more than simply deliberating and making wise decisions. It is about prayerful attentiveness to God’s presence in us and in the world\, and openness to answering God’s call to us\, both personally and collectively. \n\n\n\nThe examen prayer\, which St Ignatius asked Jesuits to pray twice daily\, is a fundamental practice of discernment. It helps us to cultivate awareness of God’s action in us and in our world\, and to pay attention to our response. It is not an examination of conscience\, like our reflection in preparation for the sacrament of reconciliation\, but rather and examination of our consciousness\, and so it is sometimes known as the consciousness examen. \n\n\n\nThere are many contemporary versions of the examen. They share five steps or elements that can be summarized as expression gratitude\, seeking insight\, reflecting\, noticing\, and looking forward. \n\n\n\nFind out more about St Ignatius of Loyola here. \n\n\n\nImage Credit

SUMMARY:World Day against Trafficking in Persons
DESCRIPTION:“On this World Day against Trafficking in Persons\, let us reaffirm our commitment to stop criminals from ruthlessly exploiting people for profit and to help victims rebuild their lives.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres\n\n\n\nCatholic Social Justice Series paper no 79 Human Trafficking and Slavery\, A Response from Australian Catholics comes out of the work of ACRATH\, the Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans. It reminds us that human trafficking and similar forms of exploitation affect every country on earth. They flourish because of society’s greed for cheap goods and services\, and because it is so easy to forget that those who meet these needs are human beings with their own innate God-given dignity. Deliverance from slavery is one of the great themes that run through Scriptures.
