SUMMARY:1989: Murder of six Jesuit priests and two co-workers in El Salvador

They polled poor citizens and kept detailed records of refugees fleeing the country. \n\n\n\nReport of the UN Truth Commission on El Salvador pages 45-47

SUMMARY:Universal Children's Day
DESCRIPTION:“Around the world\, children are showing us their strength and leadership advocating for a more sustainable world for all. Let’s build on advances and re-commit to putting children first. For every child\, every right.” – UN Secretary-General António Guterres \n\n\n\nWorld Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness\, awareness among children worldwide\, and improving children’s welfare. \n\n\n\nNovember 20th is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

SUMMARY:1959: Adoption by UN of the Declaration of Rights of the Child
DESCRIPTION:In 1959\, the UN General Assembly adopted the  Declaration of the Rights of the Child\, which defines children’s rights to protection\, education\, health care\, shelter\, and good nutrition. It was followed on the same day in 1989 by a Convention on the Rights of the Child. Unlike a Declaration\, a Convention is legally binding on those states that have ratified the instrument. The Convention views children as human beings with a distinct set of rights instead of as passive objects of care and charity. \n\n\n\nA simple version of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Simple Version) is available \n\n\n\nDid you know?\n\n\n\nThe Convention on the Rights of the Child is the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history.

SUMMARY:1981: UN Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief
DESCRIPTION:The Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief was proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 36/55 of 25 November 1981. \n\n\n\nToday is a great day to consider how we can play a part in rejecting intolerance and discrimination based on religion or belief in our communities. This is not only about our own freedom and rights. As Christians we are called to stand with and to stand up for people of other faiths who experience intolerance and discrimination in Australia.

SUMMARY:International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
DESCRIPTION:The Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women issued by the UN General Assembly in 1993\, defines violence against women as “any act of gender-based violence that results in\, or is likely to result in\, physical\, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women\, including threats of such acts\, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty\, whether occurring in public or in private life.” \n\n\n\nAlthough men and children – both girls and boys – may be victims of domestic violence\, overwhelmingly the victims of domestic violence are women. Responsibility for prevention and for responding to the victims cannot be left to our social service organisations – a Church response must include action by parish communities. \n\n\n\n“Domestic violence is at epidemic levels across Australia\, creating vulnerability for women of all walks of life. For the past three years\, one woman a week is murdered by her partner. This is a tragic epidemic that the Australian Catholic Church hasn’t addressed in a systematic manner...” – Liz MacKinlay\, “Domestic Violence: Moving from Silence to Inclusion and Dialogue in the Australian Church”\, in Still Listening to the Spirit: Woman and Man Twenty Years Later\n\n\n\nAs Bishop Peter A Comensoli (previously Bishop of Broken Bay now Archbishop of Melbourne) says in his introduction to the Broken Bay Diocese resource kit A Catholic Response to Domestic Violence: \n\n\n\n“As Church\, the living body of Christ\, we cannot remain silent. We must collectively and personally denounce a violence which erodes the human person in every way. We must work to build communities of peace\, safety\, true reconciliation\, and relationships that seek alternatives to violence. Pope Francis tells us ‘If violence has its source in the human heart\, then it its fundamental that non-violence be practised before all else within families…’ I encourage you to do whatever you can to act on this issue. Do not be a bystander. Find out now what you can do to help those suffering in silence within your community. Broken Bay Diocese\, A Catholic Response to Domestic Violence\n\n\n\nAction:\n\n\n\nThe United Nations is running a 16 day campaign which ACRATH (Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking Humans) is supporting through the creation of resources and focused advocacy. The 16 day campaign will focus on eliminating gender-based violence. \n\n\n\nThe campaign begins on 25 November which is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and finishes on Human Rights day\, 10 December. \n\n\n\nYou can join in by utilising the resources found here. \n\n\n\nThere are: \n\n\n\nprayerssocial media tilesreflection questionsactions collaborative spaces \n\n\n\nTo access this go to https://acrath.org.au/take-action/16-days/

SUMMARY:1961: First raising of the Morning Star flag\, West Papua
DESCRIPTION:On this day in 1961 the West Papuan national flag\, the Morning Star was first raised.  \n\n\n\nThe flag was raised by West Papuan legislators who had been promised independence by then-colonial ruler\, the Netherlands. \n\n\n\nAlthough the Netherlands’ commitment did not come to fruition\, the flag prepared for an independent West Papua continues to be a symbol of the desire for self-determination and independence for the West Papuan people. \n\n\n\n2021 marks the 60th anniversary of the first flag raising.  \n\n\n\nIn 1962 Indonesia invaded West Papua\, an act later recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 1969. Since then\, the raising of the Morning Star flag has been treated as a criminal offense. SUMMARY:International Day for Abolition of Slavery
DESCRIPTION:Slavery is not something from the past. According to the  International Labour Organisation (ILO) more than 40 million people worldwide are victims of modern slavery. ‘Modern slavery’ is an umbrella term referring to practices such as forced labour\, debt bondage\, forced marriage\, and human trafficking. These practices place people in situations of exploitation that they cannot refuse or leave because of threats\, violence\, coercion\, deception\, and/or abuse of power. \n\n\n\nThe Australian Government has enacted laws aimed at stamping out modern slavery\, including by eliminating it from the supply chains of Australian businesses and organisations. \n\n\n\nAction\n\n\n\nIs your organisation required to submit a Modern Slavery Statement? Check out the guidance for entities that are required to submit such statements here. \n\n\n\nDid you know that the Archdiocese of Sydney has an Anti-Slavery Taskforce? It provides education\, guidance and advice to help Church entities to ensure that they are not unwittingly involved in modern slavery and to meet their legal reporting obligations. \n\n\n\nFind out more about the United Nations’ celebration of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.

SUMMARY:2000: 350\,000 people walk for reconciliation in Melbourne and Perth
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne walk\, starting at Flinders Street Station and finishing at King’s Domain gardens\, drew as many as 300\,000 people. \n\n\n\nThe bridge walk and similar events across Australia were enormously important in showing that public sentiment was moving towards support for more concrete steps in the reconciliation process. Though the event was organised by Aboriginal people those taking part were from all sections of the Australian community. \n\n\n\nImportantly\, the walks were not a protest but a peaceful demonstration that reflected a shift in the public mood and a growing awareness of the importance of reconciliation and a need for a national apology. \n\n\n\nWalk for reconciliation\, National Museum Australia \n\n\n\nFor reflection\n\n\n\nDid you\, or someone you know\, participate in a walk for reconciliation? SUMMARY:International Day of People with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of People with Disability was introduced by the United Nations in 1992 and has been supported by the Australian Government since 1996. This day aims to increase public awareness\, understanding and acceptance of people with disability\, and to celebrate their achievements and contributions. There are 4.4 million Australians with disability. The 2021 theme for IDPWD is Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities: toward an inclusive\, accessible\, and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.  \n\n\n\nThe ACBC Office for Justice\, Ecology and Peace has created resources for the day\, including prayers\, prayers services\, information and stories as well as images that can be used for presentations or social media. These resources are available in full here. \n\n\n\nPope Francis highlighted three points in his 2020 message for IDPWD: promoting a culture of life that constantly affirms the dignity of people with disabilities; inclusion that seeks to speak no longer about ‘them’\, but rather about ‘us’; and opening active participation to people with disability to support all to belong and to contribute in their communities:  \n\n\n\nIn virtue of their baptism\, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples. All the baptised\, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith\, are agents of evangelisation.  Evangelii Gaudium\, 120. \n\n\n\nPeople with disability are part of the Body of Christ. Their voices in any conversations and decisions regarding their lives must be centred and heard: disability advocate Carly Findlay names this as “nothing about us without us.” Justin Glyn SJ links this to the life of the Trinity in communion:  \n\n\n\nThe life of the Kingdom of God\, now and in the age to come\, is a life of interdependence of all in God. Like God in Trinity\, human life is relational. Our gifts supplement the weakness and limitations of others. Impairment – which in the final analysis is the lot of the whole of humanity – reminds us that\, for all the beauty of our variegated bodies\, we are an interdependent community called into new life in and through a God who has made us for love of God and others whose very essence is relationship. ‘Us’ Not ‘Them’\, Catholic Social Justice Series\, 2019. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGoing Deeper \n\n\n\nUnited Nations international and national resources: https://www.idpwd.com.au \n\n\n\n2. SUMMARY:World Soil Day (WSD)
DESCRIPTION:Did you know?*It can take up to 1\,000 years to produce just 2-3cm of soil.*Over 33% of the Earth’s soils are already degraded and 90% could become degraded by 2050.*Soil erosion can lead up to a 50% loss in crop yields. \n\n\n\nWorld Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. \n\n\n\nThe date of 5 December was chosen because it corresponds with the official birthday of the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej\, King of Thailand\, who was one of the main proponents of this initiative.

SUMMARY:Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus)
DESCRIPTION:Children all over the world know him and love him. In Germany\, he’s Kriss Kringle. In France\, he’s Pere Noel. British children call him Father Christmas. Of course\, you know him as Santa Claus. \n\n\n\nHe’s got another name – it’s an ancient one that goes back hundreds of years. It’s one of the very first names people called him: St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra which is in the country we now call Turkey. Nicholas was loved for one reason. He loved. He loved God and God’s people so much that he would do anything for them. \n\n\n\nSt. Nicholas showed his gratitude for God’s gifts by giving to others. What gifts can your family share with those in need? \n\n\n\nSource: Loyola Press.

SUMMARY:1965: Vatican II Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes ('Joys and Hopes')
DESCRIPTION:Second Vatican Council\, Gaudium et Spes\, December 7\, 1965 \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World \n\n\n\nThe joys and the hopes\, the griefs and the anxieties of the people of this age\, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted\, these are the joys and hopes\, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ.                                                                                                                                   Gaudium et Spes\, 1. \n\n\n\nThe Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World Gaudium et Spes was promulgated by Pope Paul VI on 7 December 1965. Read an introduction to Gaudium et Spes here. \n\n\n\nThis important document emphasised a theology of Christian mission\, describing the church as “leaven in the world” (Gaudium et Spes\, 40). The church was called to play an active part in shaping the wider world\, offering the gift of Christ in dialogue with all people in a collaborative model. All Christians\, by virtue of their baptism\, were invited and empowered to proclaim the Gospel by their lives and their living. This call to holiness was not reserved only for some but open to all\, with the strong formation of Christian conscience considered a primary consideration and need. \n\n\n\nGaudium et Spes calls Christians to an integrated life that sees the match of word and deed in their dealings in both public and private spheres. The document stands against a form of religion that creates any artificial split between worship and mission. It names the best way to fulfil the obligations of justice and love as people contributing to the common good; this leads to better living conditions for all people\, especially those most in need (Gaudium et Spes 25\, 30\, 43\, 75). The dignity and value of the human person is central (26\, 27). \n\n\n\nOn the other hand\, the right of having a share of earthly goods sufficient for oneself and one’s family belongs to everyone. The Fathers and Doctors of the Church held this opinion\, teaching that all are obliged to come to the relief of the poor and to do so not merely out of their superfluous goods. If one is in extreme necessity\, they have the right to procure for themselves what they need out of the riches of others. Since there are so many people prostrate with hunger in the world\, this sacred council urges all\, both individuals and governments\, to remember the aphorism of the Fathers\, “Feed the person dying of hunger\, because if you have not fed them\, you have killed them\,” and really to share and employ their earthly goods\, according to the ability of each\, especially by supporting individuals or peoples with the aid by which they may be able to help and develop themselves.
