Greetings Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has been undergoing a period of review and renewal. It follows the 10-yearly review of the Bishops Conference and a review of funding for the Bishops Conference.
Many changes took place within the Bishops Conference late last year. Some changes to the Office for Social Justice were made then, but additional changes are now being implemented. They come after a period of consultation about how the Bishops Commission for Social Justice, Mission and Service can fulfil its mandate.
The changes are as follows:
- The Office for Social Justice continues, but with one staff member rather than three. Dr Sandie Cornish, currently Publications and Research Officer, takes on a new role of Social Justice Officer.
- Mr John Ferguson, Director, and Ms Lyn Delaguiado, Administration Officer, have both accepted redundancies. They will conclude with the Office in mid- to late October.
- The Australian Catholic Social Justice Council will continue, with a broader mandate. The process of renewing the Council’s membership to fulfil that mandate has commenced.
- Caritas Australia will assist the Commission with aspects of social justice formation, education and animation, working closely with the Office for Social Justice.
This note is a chance for me to publicly acknowledge, as I have privately, the exceptional service that John Ferguson has provided as a faithful, committed and diligent employee of the Church in a variety of roles for over two decades. Lyn Delaguiado has also been a valued member of the Office for Social Justice, contributing greatly to its smooth operation.
We are confident that both John and Lyn will continue to be advocates for justice, as we are confident that Sandie Cornish will carry forward the Office’s work with her many and diverse skills.
Please keep John, Sandie, Lyn, the Commission and all those we serve in your prayers and thank you for your support.
Yours sincerely in Christ,
Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFM Conv Chairman Bishops Commission for Social Justice, Mission and Service
